Geosciences, Geoarchaeology Concentration

Geoarchaeology is the application of earth science methods and concepts to address questions about past human activity.  Students will study traditional earth science subjects such as soils, geomorphology, geology and the physical landscape, then apply this knowledge to address questions regarding past human settlement, ancient landscape and climate reconstructions.  Students will be provided with opportunities to develop and apply hands-on skills in both field and laboratory environments.  Students who complete this degree will be qualified to work in a variety of earth science and / or environmental fields (e.g., conservation, and regulation and enforcement).  Additionally, students will be eligible for entry-level positions in the Cultural Resource Management sector, which includes firms and State and Federal governmental departments, or pursue advanced degrees at the graduate level.

  • To provide qualified Geoscience professionals for employment in the state of Pennsylvania and beyond
  • To increase employment opportunities for graduates of Mansfield University

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will exhibit the ability to collect and record earth science data following commonly accepted professional standards and practices
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of natural processes and be able to identify past human interaction and impact
  • Students will apply appropriate analytical and quantitative methods to address a research problem
