Substance Use and Behavior Disorder Counseling, Associate of Science

The Associates degree in Addiction and Substance use disorders, prepares its graduates to practice in the field of substance use and behavior disorder treatment.  Graduates will be able to apply learned skills to help individuals who are living with addiction or substance use issues improve the quality of their lives.  Coursework focuses on students developing professional and ethical standards, communication skills, basic counseling skills, interviewing, record keeping, resource advocacy, and a deeper understanding and appreciation of behavioral and substance use disorders.  The degree features three semesters of coursework followed by a 12 credit internship where the student will be able to connect the knowledge and skills obtained in the classroom with those that are practiced in the field.

Program Objectives:

  1. Provide students who will lead the profession in service to those who are living with behavioral and substance use disorders with the basic skills necessary to provide such services.
  2. Provide field education that enhances the student’s connection between theory and application, and increases awareness of diversity and research-informed practice.

Program Learning Outcomes:

After successful completion of the A.S. Degree students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to perform basic counseling skills:
    •   Engage with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.
    •   Assess individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.
    •   Intervene with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.
    •   Evaluate practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior.
  • Engage difference and diversity in practice.
  • Advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice.
