Environmental Technology, Associate of Applied Science

Students in the Environmental Technology program will master common environmental procedures such as sampling, assessment, design, determining results, recording and analysis.  The students will gain valuable knowledge through experiential learning and environmental problem solving in both the lab and the field.  The program will also provide an opportunity, for those who so desire, to seamlessly continue to a four-year bachelor’s degree in Geosciences or Safety Management.  The student is also strongly encouraged to complete OSHA, HAZWOPER, and/or PEC Safeland Training before graduation.

Program Objectives

The program is designed to prepare students for jobs in the high-demand career paths of Environmental Technology with government, consulting firms and private industries.  The applied skill sets and knowledge that form the core of this degree program also provide important components for broader academic exploration and intellectual growth in quantitative skills, communication, leadership, and an understanding of the natural world.  The degree stresses the importance of clear communication and teamwork in planning and developing solutions to complex problems.  Students also gain firsthand knowledge of issues that are driving social, economic, and environmental changes in locally, regionally and globally.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • Analyze and interpret data for problem solving.
  • Communicate effectively while working on a team.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to quality, timeliness, professional development and recognize the need for and engage in lifelong learning.
    • Environmental Technician Concentration
      • Apply skills of the discipline to activities including, but not limited to: hydrology, water treatment, pollution prevention and treatment, and sustainable design.
      • Conduct standard field and laboratory testing.
      • Work professionally in the area of environmental systems while understanding professional and ethical responsibility.
    • Safety Management Concentration
      • Lead others in promoting safe work sites.
      • Describe the roles and responsibilities of professional safety managers.
      • Identify and apply the relevant laws, standards, and regulations that affect personal and environmental safety.
      • Communicate effectively regarding safety in various settings.
