German Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Programs

Offered by the Department of English and Modern Languages

The German minor enables Mansfield University to respond to national and regional needs by preparing students in other majors with intercultural communication skills.  They then possess the qualifications for a work environment that rewards employees proficient in German and who grasp the historical, cultural, and political background associated with German-speaking cultures.  In areas of Eastern Europe that use German commonly as a lingua franca, in southwestern Africa, and in many immigrant areas worldwide, German is used in professional settings - as it is, of course, in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Luxembourg, as well as in diplomatic circles and many business settings globally, such as the European Union, Japan, and China.

After successful completion of the minor program, students will be able to:

  • Understand and speak the target language at an intermediate-mid level as described in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines.
  • Read and write in the target language at the intermediate-mid level.
  • Demonstrate understanding of German culture.

18 s.h.
