Environmental Studies Minor

The environmental studies minor allows students of all majors to engage in a fully interdisciplinary course of study focused on the relationship between people and the natural world.  This enterprise is designed to deepen understanding of the humanities and the sciences and to suggest ways those disciplines can be integrated.  This minor will also help students to be more effective citizens in a world where the demand for resources will increase and the need for knowledge and application of sustainable practices in a time of climate change will be essential.

Program Objectives:

  1. The program will equip students to communicate effectively about environmental issues across a variety of disciplines.
  2. The program will familiarize students with what socially conscious leadership entails.
  3. The program will emphasize the necessity of adapting to new challenges.
  4. The program will prepare students to facilitate cooperation between stakeholders with different perspectives and conflicting values.

Program Learning Outcomes:

  • Graduates will employ a variety of interdisciplinary skills and approaches when evaluating and problem-solving environmental issues
  • Graduates will communicate effectively on environmental issues for a diverse audience of peers, community members, and leaders in multiple fields
  • Graduates will analyze quantitative and qualitative data in order to monitor, assess, and make decisions about issues specific to their emphasis; they will demonstrate evidence-based judgment and leadership
