Professional Studies in Secondary Education is a BSE program (housed in the Ed/Special Ed Department) with multiple concentrations in the various subject areas; English, math, social studies, and science. Program students undergo an inquiry-based general education program that balances data-driven decision-making and descriptive statistics with a design-thinking approach in new media that emphasizes creative problem-solving. Candidates work closely with content-area faculty to develop mastery in their field of concentration. Education and special education faculty support candidates as they develop their knowledge of research theories and methodologies and apply these toward assessing and understanding adolescent learners and educational systems to inform instructional planning and implementation in field-based settings. This developing knowledge is assessed within the core secondary education and special education courses, field experiences, and in a professional portfolio.
This program prepares teacher candidates to make effective, proactive and reflective contributions to public education at the secondary level. Candidates will be facile with pedagogical research in educational psychology and literacy, as well as the content in their concentration. All candidates will demonstrate proficiency in understanding the organizational structure of public high schools, as well as special education issues as manifested in urban and rural settings.
