Creative Writing Minor

The Creative Writing Minor examines student creativity, expression, and production through intensive reading from a variety of cultural backgrounds and time periods, extensive writing and revising, and active discussion.  Courses offered for the minor introduce students to the major literary genres of prose and poetry, and sharpen their writing skills.   Students learn to contextualize literary styles and find their own voice within them. 

Program Objectives:

  • Introductory Courses:  To learn to analyze and practice major literary devices pertinent to the various genres of creative writing.
  • Advanced Courses:  To discover the possibilities inherent in various literary genres, find their own voice within them, and develop and hone their writing skills

Program Learning Outcomes:

  • Introductory Courses:  Students will demonstrate an informed appreciation of various genres of creative writing as a literary and artistic practice and write and revise complete pieces of original creative writing in various genres.
  • Advanced Courses:  Students will develop self-awareness about the craft, revision, and workshop process and compile a portfolio of revised creative writing in a variety of genres.
