Mapping Technology Minor

The minor in Mapping Technology provides a basic grounding in Geographic Information Science and is an appropriate add-on for a wide variety of majors.  It is also useful for students going on to graduate school.

Program Objectives:

  • Provide a basic grounding in Geographic Information Science
  • Provide a relevant minor for a wide variety of majors as well as students considering graduate school
  • Enhance the employability of graduates by providing them with a relevant academic credential

Program Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to produce and interpret maps, charts, and graphs
  • Identify the necessary components of a map, including symbology, legend and scale
  • Input GPS data into a GIS
  • Describe the different components of a GIS:  hardware, software and data
  • Correctly read contour lines on a topographic map
  • Determine acreage and township / range location on a topographic map
