The global information age has accelerated demand for persons equipped with journalism skills. Our program enhances students’ abilities to gather, write and manage news and information. The program mixes professional training and surveys the role of the media in society. Related electives allow students to combine journalism skills with career interests such as technical writing, environmental journalism, graphics, sports writing and more. Some potential careers are print journalists, electronic journalists, news editors, information specialists, copywriters, and creative writers.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Mass Communication program is to serve our students, Mansfield University and our region through academic, extracurricular and cultural activities that promote the development of communication competence, critical analysis, an ethical foundation, respect for diversity, an understanding for the importance of research and recognition of the value of service, thus preparing our students for careers in their chosen fields.

Learning Outcomes

  • Write Stories - Journalism majors will be able to gather, analyze, and evaluate information from sources to create a variety of printmedia appropriate to the profession.
  • Historical Context - Journalism majors will explore the interactions between American history and the media.
  • Ethical and Moral Decision Making - Journalism majors will evaluate media sources for validity and bias to resolve ethical and moral dilemmas involving the media.
  • Freedom of the Press - Journalism majors will defend the principle that an unfettered media is necessary for a functioning democracy.

Internship

Qualified students are encouraged to participate in the Department’s successful internship program. The intern applicant must have 90 earned credits prior to the start of the internship, a 2.5 overall GPA and a 3.0 in the major to qualify.  Internships may be completed for 6-12 credits for the internship experience. A student may only complete one internship experience for credit.
