The concentration in Environmental Science is a broad-based program designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in a variety of environmental fields. Graduates typically work for: parks (as rangers or managers), state environmental agencies (such as the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection), environmental consulting firms, water treatment plants, sewage enforcement agencies, engineering firms, county soil and agricultural agencies, solid and hazardous waste firms, recycling agencies and companies associated with the natural gas industry. Many also pursue advanced degrees in graduate school.

The program emphasizes the acquisition of practical skills and knowledge. Studies in map and air photo interpretation, meteorology, hydrology, environmental issues, and computer applications are all stressed. Moreover, the requirements are designed to encourage a minor in Geology or Biology both of which are important and related disciplines. An internship is also recommended.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will explain the dynamics of and interactions between the four basic components of the Earth’s physical system: atmosphere, lithosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere
  • Graduates will explain the impact of human actions on the environment at local, regional or global scales.
