Middle Level Education with Mathematics and Science Concentration

Certification Requirements:  Mansfield University teacher education programs are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).  Candidates for teaching certification in Pennsylvania must meet state requirements as described in Chapter 354 regulations.  A description of requirements, policies, and procedures for teacher certification can be found in the catalog sections titled “University Policies.”

The Middle Level Education with Mathematics and Science Concentration program leads to recommendation to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for Middle Level teaching certification with a concentration in mathematics and science in grades 4 - 8 beginning with candidates who earn Pennsylvania teaching certification in 2014 and beyond.  Until 2014, Pennsylvania mathematics and science certifications which incorporate middle grade education can be earned in Elementary Education K - 6, Middle Level Mathematics 7 - 9, Middle Level Science 7 - 9, Mathematics 7 - 12, Biology 7 - 12, Chemistry 7 - 12, Earth and Space Science 7 - 12, General Science 7 - 12, and Physics 7 - 12 and Secondary Education 7 - 12.  The curriculum incorporates PDE competencies and NCATE standards.

The Middle Level Education with Mathematics and Science Concentration program features a foundation in adolescent development and learning, extensive preparation in content subject matter and teaching methodology, and uses of observation and student assessment to guide instructional decision-making.  Additional program emphases include development of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that are required of middle level educators.  The curriculum prepares graduates to meet the learning needs of all students and to be successful on diverse modern classrooms.  Program students also learn to adapt and plan instruction that is based on developmentally appropriate practices and to make effective uses of technology to aid teaching and learning. 

The Middle Level Education with Mathematics and Science Concentration program features extensive training in mathematics and science and extensive field work, including an intensive pre-student teaching school experience.  Graduates of the program may pursue middle level (grades 4 - 8) teaching positions.
