The Master of Science in Nursing program prepares experienced nurses who have a baccalaureate degree to be nurse educators. Graduates are qualified to teach in baccalaureate and associate degree, and Licensed Practical nursing programs or provide staff development in health care settings. The program is designed specifically for professional nurses seeking an advanced degree while maintaining current employment; thus, the Master of Science in Nursing Program is offered on-line. Ideally students take two courses for six semesters to complete the program in two calendar years.

Students choose one of four major clinical focus areas: medical-surgical nursing, maternal-child nursing, psychiatric nursing or community health nursing. All experiential activities center on student’s chosen clinical focus area.

At the completion of the program, the student will be able to:

• Integrate epistemological perspectives from nursing science, education and evaluation to design, implement and evaluate nursing curricula.
• Analyze the impact of social, ethical, cultural, economic, and political influences on nursing education and nursing practice.
• Engage in scholarly inquiry to clarify and improve nursing education and/or nursing practice.
• Analyze implications of legal and ethical accountability of nursing faculty in the classroom and clinical arenas.
• Design, implement and evaluate teaching strategies for classroom and clinical arenas.
• Synthesize knowledge from nursing science and learning theory to demonstrate praxis of teaching in the classroom and clinical arenas.
• Function in the role of a nurse educator in academia upon graduation and exhibit a future commitment to excellence in nursing education.
• Document expertise in a clinical focus.

Students are required to submit an outcomes portfolio before graduation. The program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (61 Broadway, NYC, NY 10006; 800-669-9656).

Admission prequisites for ALL students admitted to MSN program

• RN Licensure
• Bachelors of Science in Nurisng degree or other bachelors degree
• Completion of the following courses at the baccalaureate or higher level
  •       Research
  •       Community Health Nursing
  •       Pathophysiology/Pharmacology (minimum of 3 credits)
  •       Health (or Physical) Assessment
• 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA on 4.0 scale
• Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work completed at any institution
• Official transcripts from basic nursing program
• One professional letter of recommendation indicating student’s ability to do graduate level work
• Application fee of $25
