GEG 2520 - ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE Human societies indelibly modify their environment in order to enhance economic development. In many cases, the environmental degradation created by these modifications impacts disadvantaged segments of society significantly more than others. Environmental justice is a field informed by cultural geography, social science, grassroots activism, and ethics. Topics covered will include a history of the environmental justice movement in the U.S.; a substantial review of the past environmental justice projects; the ethical dynamics between capitalism, inequality, and environmental degradation; how to understand maps and diagrams of demographic data, as well as how to create basic ones.
